About The Word Department

About The Word Department.

Freelance copywriter, content writer, word monkey — there are many names for what I do. The short version is 'I'm a copywriter, with bags of experience'.

The longer version is 'I help brands with everything they put into words, from real-world stuff like copywriting for packaging to online copywriting.'

I didn't write a medium version. Who are you, Goldilocks?

Who I am.

I’m Doug Nolan, and I’ve been writing for businesses since 1995. I’ve been a copywriter in agencies, in-house, and in words up to my neck as a Head of Copy. I set up The Word Department to help brands use language that's more natural — and more effective —than dry, corporate twaddle.

Who I work with.

I write brand copy for small startups, well-known brands I'm too modest to mention (okay, I signed non-disclosure agreements), government departments and even the fantastic NHS.

I also work with some brilliant design and digital agencies. So if you need a full campaign, I can put you in touch. Or if you're an agency and you need a good writer, get in touch.

Why you should hire me.

The person who does your work (a copywriter) is the person you'll speak to (that same copywriter). There are no account handlers or mystery middlefolk here.

So you won't end up with four candles when you wanted fork handles (apologies to master wordsmith Ronnie Barker).

Where I work.

I live in Edinburgh and I write remotely for clients in London, Manchester and the rest of the UK — saving them time, money and CO2.

So if you need copywriting that helps your brand sound more human, just whistle*.

* Whistling has since proved impractical.
